Following restiveness over a purported jihad targeted at Plateau State, the state Police Command has assured citizens that there is no such thing, urging them to be calm.
The rumoured jihad on Plateau State has been trending on the social media. Though the state government earlier denied such, the Police yesterday said thorough investigation revealed that the rumour is a hoax and should be ignored.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mathias Tyopev, “the attention of the Plateau State Police Command has been drawn to an inciting document entitled The Final Jihad on the Plateau, being circulated by mischief-makers on the Plateau with the aim of creating fear and hate among the peace-loving people of Plateau State to cause a breakdown of law and order.
“After investigation, Plateau State Police Command realised that the initiator of this inciting document opened a fake Facebook account just for this purpose.
“We also found out that there was no truth in the write up and considers it as the handiwork of faceless mischief-makers, who are bent on fanning the embers of religious and political hate and disunity in the state with a view to causing the breach of the peace.
“The Plateau State Police Command therefore warns that any individual or group of individuals caught circulating documents capable of inciting religious passion or promoting hate speeches will be dealt with in accordance with the extant laws of the land.
“Members of the public are advised to ignore such insidious write ups and go about their normal and lawful businesses.”
