The three-storey building which collapsed in Jos, Plateau State, leaving no fewer than 14 people dead last Monday, had no approval from the state government.
The General Manager of Jos Metropolitan Development Board, Mr Kefas Yarlwang, said this in an interview with our correspondent in Jos on Wednesday.
Yarlwang said, “When the incident happened, we went to work to get more information about the building. But from our records, we discovered that the collapsed building had no approval before it was erected.
“We have instructed our team of engineers to get to the root of the matter on why the building caved in. We are still awaiting the report of their investigation and we will make it public once they conclude their assignment.”
The general manager also said the agency had concluded plans to conduct integrity tests on all buildings in the area and other parts of the state to determine their structural stability in line with the directive of the state government
He lamented the rising cases of building collapse in the state which he largely attributed to non compliance with the state’s urban development laws which required that those planning to erect any structure must first get approval from government before embarking on such projects.
The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Mrs Roselyn Dakwar, told our correspondent that the rescue operation had ended.
