The Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) company has called on communities across its franchise states of Benue, Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe States to only deal with genuine representatives of the company.

The company’s Head of Technical Operations, Eng. John Emeruwa explained that there are imposters who parade themselves as JED staff and advised people to be cautious and investigate their identities before going into transactions with such persons.

Emeruwa told Benue/Plateau Chronicle in Jos, that “communities are not supposed to pay money to individuals, but to a JED authorized pay point and collect receipts.”

He said the company was facing unprecedented vandalism on its electricity assets, especially in Plateau State with at least 20 transformers being vandalised monthly.

“Once a transformer is vandalized, most of the critical materials are removed and they are expensive. Destruction of transformers, and substations is a recurring issue,” he said.

Also speaking, the company’s Executive Director, Marketing, Verr Jirbo, described energy theft as another big challenge facing the company. “It comes in the form of Illegal extension to their neighbours or people just refusing to pay their bills. And sometimes our staff are even attacked by the communities.”
