Civil Society Organisations (CSO’s) in Plateau state and the Coalition of Domestic Observers for the just concluded Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections have frowned at the unprofessional conduct of some domestic observers during the March 9 polls.

Speaking to journalists in Jos, the group said that it was appalled at the allegations that some domestic observers stayed in the homes of politicians during the exercises.

The group assured that the it will work towards checking such unprofessional conduct.

The Coordinator of the civil societies in the state, Dr. Godwin Okoko, who read the report of the group, however, commended those societies who were professional in carrying out their duties.

He also commended staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, CSOs, security agencies and media, observer groups, religious groups as well as traditional institutions and the political parties for their positive roles during the elections.

Okoko stated that though the group was disappointed with the continuous trend of inconclusive elections across the country and specifically in Plateau state, it called on residents to remain calm and peaceful.

“We observed with disappointment, the continuous trend of inconclusive elections across the country and specifically in Plateau state. If such trend is not mitigated upon, it has the potential to disrupt the fragile peace currently enjoyed in the state,” they stated.

They adjudged the election as generally peaceful and orderly but advised INEC to prosecute any staff involved in electoral malpractice and sympathised with the families of the corps members who sustained injuries during a recent ghastly motor accident in the cause of election duty.
