The Plateau State Government on Tuesday warned residents, political party supporters and other stakeholders in the state against celebrating the outcome of the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The government, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Yakubu Dati, said the warning became necessary “against the backdrop that elections in Nigeria are very emotional issues that could be wildly celebrated.”

The commissioner said, “Though it is the right of citizens to celebrate, it should not be done in a manner that threatens the right of other citizens and the peace of the state

“Elections are brotherly affairs and therefore there is no need to disrupt the peace or antagonise others while celebrating.”

He called on political, religious leaders as well as parents to prevail on their followers and wards to, while celebrating, “respect the rights of others,” warning that “security agencies have been put on red alert to prevent any reckless celebration in the state.”

He however praised the citizens for their peaceful conduct during the elections and implored the people to sustain the momentum.
