The chairman of the Plateau State Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Robert Taple, has hinted that the state government spends N3billion monthly on workers’ salaries.

Taple said that for Plateau State which is a civil service state the huge wage bill had boosted the economy through buying and selling of goods and services.

In a chat with LEADERSHIP in his office in Jos, Taple said that if somebody claimed that these had not made any impact on the economy and on the people of the state then, he or she must be from the opposition.

He said that when he came on board with his team, he saw the need to tour the local government areas and used the opportunity to read the riot act to the workers about the commission’s resolve to restore the lost glory of the agency.

Taple revealed that the commission discovered that the local government system was bedevilled with corruption, truancy, indiscipline which had persisted for years until the present administration of Governor Simon Lalong ensured that the grassroots government was no longer politicized.

“That was done without minding the damage it has brought to the common man at the grassroots who deserves good infrastructure, good drinking water and affordable healthcare system.

These services were not there during our visit to the councils,” he said.

The commission’s chairman disclosed that there are 17,000 workers in the 17 councils, adding that the agency employs, confirms, discipline, promotes and trains employees to achieve optimal performance.
