The authorities of Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, have assured members of the Joint Action Committee of (JAC) of the non-teaching staff unions in the university of its commitment to prioritise the welfare and address all issues concerning their well-being.

This assurance came on the heels of a meeting of the leadership of JAC, comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), where issues bothering on the payment of Staff Earned Allowances and Study Leave entitlements, among others were presented to management. While addressing members of the unions, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yohana Daniel Izam, who led other principal officers of the university to the meeting, being the first since he assumed office, expressed the management’s determination to address issues concerning the welfare of staff. According to him, since staff welfare is a critical component in promoting academic excellence and enhanced performance, the university therefore will not compromise the welfare of the workers.

Izam, who regretted the current ranking by the National Universities Commission, which placed the institution at number 136th position on the ranking table of universities in the country, stated that for this trend to be reversed, adequate attention must be paid to every critical component of the university architecture, particularly the relationship between unions and the management.

He noted that as part of his administration’s efforts at addressing the demands of all workers’ unions, he recalled that immediately on assumption of office he constituted various committees to look into the nagging issues of the Earned Allowances, Ad-hoc staff and pension and gratuity scheme among others. He added that it is now on record that all ad-hoc staff have been interviewed and would be given pensionable appointments as soon as the committee submitted its report. This, according to him, apart from the fact that the Pension and Gratuity Committee had reached advance stage, the committee on Earned Allowances had since submitted its interim report to the management.

The Acting JAC Chairman, Mr. Pam Bulus, while welcoming the Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to him and his management team for the concrete steps taken to address pending union demands, which in the past had been a major source of industrial disharmony at the institution. He, therefore, promised that the new Interim Exco was ready to work with the management to move the university forward, saying that the existence of unions is not only expressed in agitations, but also in making positive impact through support and being partners in progress with the management.
