Police arraign two for allegedly assaulting referee during a match in Jos

The Plateau State Police Command have arraigned two out of the four hoodlums who allegedly attacked referee, Sam Agba at the end of the Nigeria Professional Football League match between Plateau United Football Club of Jos and FC IfeanyiUbah of Nnewi at the New Jos Stadium.

The accused identified as Lawal Jibrin, 30, alias Crazy and Auwalu Abdullahi, 30, alias Shedan were arrested by the police on Wednesday and arraigned yesterday before Upper Area Court III, Kasuwar Nama in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

During the sitting yesterday, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Gokwat Ibrahim said that the accused were in court due a complaint lodged on 30th January, 2019 at 1600 hours by Mr Pius Henwan, ‘M’ , the General Manager of Plateau United of Jos, who reported the case to Nigeria Police Area Command, Metro.

Mr Ibrahim told court that, Mr Henwan reported to the police that on 13th January, 2019 there was a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match between Plateau United and FC IfeanyiUbah of Nnewi and that after the match had ended the accused before the court and other four hoodlums now at large conspired, attacked and assaulted the match officials.

Mr Ibrahim added that the suspects thereby committed an offence punishable under section 59 and 239 of the Penal Code of Plateau State Nigeria.

Both the accused dismissed the allegations and pleaded not guilty.

The prosecuting lawyer then urged court to adjourn the matter to enable him established his case against the accused.

The accused were given N50, 000 bail each or to bring someone residing within the court jurisdiction that would serve as their surety.

The accused also signed undertaking promising that they would exhibit good behavior throughout the court proceedings.

The presiding judge, Hon. Mohammed Yahaya (Esq.) then adjourned the matter to 27th February, 2019 for continuation of the hearing.
